Öğe EXPLORING THE BENEFITS OF FREQUENT AND POSITIVE INTERGENERATIONAL CONTACT ON YOUNG ADULTS' BEHAVIORAL INTENTIONS TOWARD OLDER ADULTS: THE MODERATING ROLE OF OPTIMISM AND AGING ATTITUDES(Tuncay AYDEMİR, 2023) Wise, Ryan; Kilci, BilgeThis study examined the moderating effects of future anxiety and aging attitudes on the relationship between intergenerational contact and behavioral intentions of young adults towards older adults in Turkey in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes in February 2023. Participants included 201 young adults with a mean age of 20.98 (SD=1.94). The study supported Hypothesis 1, indicating that young adults with more frequent and positive contact with older adults demonstrated greater behavioral intentions towards older adults. Hypothesis 2 was supported only for contact frequency, suggesting that aging attitudes moderated the effects of contact frequency on behavioral intentions. Hypothesis 3 was supported only for contact frequency, indicating that future anxiety moderates the relationship between contact frequency and behavioral intentions. Specifically, individuals with lower levels of future anxiety and frequent intergenerational contact demonstrated stronger behavioral intentions towards older adults than those with higher future anxiety and infrequent contact. These findings hold practical implications for developing policies and programs that can enhance intergenerational solidarity and caregiving in Turkey and elsewhere, addressing the critical need for support for older adults in the wake of adverse living situations.Öğe Intergenerational Relationship Characteristics and Grandchildren's Perceptions of Grandparent Goal Influence(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2010) Wise, RyanThis study examines grandparent influence on goal preferences of young adult grandchildren as a function of grandparent-grandchild relationship characteristics. The current sample consists of 404 grandchildren between the ages of 18 and 25. The results of multiple regression analyses indicate that the relationship model predicts overall grandparent goal influence. An analysis of the contribution of specific activities indicates that emotional closeness makes a significant positive contribution to the regression model.Öğe Intergenerational Relationships and Aging Anxiety among Emerging Adults in Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2021) Wise, Ryan; Onol, AsliRecent trends in Turkey indicate that in the near future a considerable percentage of the population will be over the age of 65. One consequence of this demographic development is that grandparents and grandchildren may potentially have more contact with each other as they both age across the life course. As intergenerational contact will become more frequent and extend for a longer period of time, it is important to investigate the influence that grandparents have on their grandchild. This study investigates the relationship between intergenerational contact, emotional closeness and grandparents' influence on grandchildren's aging anxiety. Results indicated that perceptions of emotional closeness was influenced by various components of grandparent-grandchild interaction, including physical proximity, contact medium, and contact quality. Grandchild aging anxiety was related to both contact quality, contact frequency, and emotional closeness, but only for the domains of psychological concerns and fear of old people. Results are discussed in the context of both intergenerational influence and Turkish culture.Öğe THE DARK TRIAD, SOCIOSEXUAL ORIENTATION, AND PERCEPTIONS OF MALE ATTRACTIVENESS: INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL CONTEXT(Tuncay AYDEMİR, 2023) Wise, Ryan; Değirmencioğlu, EylülThis study examines the impact of the Dark Triad traits (Narcissism, Psychopathy, and Machiavellianism) and sociosexual orientation on the assessment of an unfamiliar man's attractiveness within three social scenarios: solitary, accompanied by a dog, and accompanied by a baby. A sample of 109 female participants (N=109) contributed attractiveness ratings, with an average age of 21.06 (SD = 3.81). The findings reveal notable discrepancies in attractiveness ratings across conditions, with higher attractiveness ratings given to the dog condition compared to the baby condition. The ANCOVA integrating Dark Triad traits as covariates exhibited statistical significance, with Machiavellianism emerging as a significant covariate with attractiveness ratings, whereas Sociosexual Orientation did not achieve covariate significance. The implications of these results are contextualized within the existing literature, offering insights into the potential influence of Machiavellianism on attractiveness perceptions and the role of contextual cues in the perceptions of others.Öğe THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TOLL OF HIGH SCHOOL BULLYING: SOCIAL ANXIETY AND COPING STRATEGIES IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS(Tuncay AYDEMİR, 2023) Wise, Ryan; Shakoor, Maham; Boratav, Hale BolakThis qualitative study examines the enduring impact of high school bullying experiences on social anxiety among university students. Utilizing online semistructured interviews conducted via Zoom, data was gathered from eight (N=8) university students who selfidentified as victims of bullying during their high school years. The interview questions asked participants about the nature of bullying experienced, the dynamics of the bullyvictim relationship, the psychological and emotional repercussions, and the coping mechanisms employed. The collected data underwent a rigorous thematic analysis employing Braun and Clarke's (2013) sixstage approach. The findings reveal a significant association between high school bullying and subsequent social anxiety. The analysis uncovers six prominent emergent themes: (1) Emotional and Verbal Bullying, (2) Physical Bullying, (3) the relationship between Bully and Victim, (4) the Psychological and Emotional Impact of High School Bullying, (5) Social Anxiety and Adjustment to University Life, and (6) Coping Strategies. These themes contribute to a deeper understanding of the participants' past experiences, illuminating the enduring effects of high school bullying on psychological wellbeing. The significance of this research is discussed concerning its implications for educational institutions, mental health services, professionals, interventions, and future research directions. The study advocates for further investigations in this area, given the longterm implications on the mental health of victims, and contributes to the growing body of literature positing bullying as a significant public health concern.
