Öğe ASSESSING THE VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY OF THE TURKISH VERSION OF THE MATE RETENTION INVENTORY - SHORT FORM(Tuncay AYDEMİR, 2022) Wise, Ryan Macey; Karkılı, SenanurThe current study examined the psychometric features of the Turkish translation of the Mate Retention InventoryShort Form (MRI-SF) in Turkey. For this study, 286 participants were recruited with 78 participants (27.3%) being men and 208 participants (72.7%) women between the ages of 18 and 34 (M = 22.1, SD = 2.79). Participants were requested to complete a demographic form, the Turkish version of the Mate Retention InventoryShort Form (MRI-SF), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Multidimensional Jealousy Scale. Consistent with the earlier studies, the 19 mate retention tactics constituted a twocomponent structure. Sex differences in the adoption of mate retention strategies were investigated in order to assess the construct validity of the Turkish version of the MRI-SF. Additionally, the relationship between mate retention strategies and sexual jealousy and self-esteem was examined to determine the construct validity. The findings were in accordance with the previous studies and the analyses revealed that the Turkish MRI-SF is a valid measurement tool.Öğe Career Satisfaction and Adult Attachment Style Among Working Adults: Evidence from Turkey(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Wise, Ryan MaceyAbstract: This study examined the relationship between employee attachment style, organizational factors, and career satisfaction among adult employees in Turkey. A total of 288 (167 female, 121 male) employees working in two sectors participated in this study with an age range of 22 to 60 years (M = 31.8, SD = 7.4). Adult attachment styles were measured with the Relationship Scales Questionnaire and career satisfaction was assessed with the Career Satisfaction Scale. A series of multiple hierarchical regression analyses and correlational analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between career satisfaction, attachment style, and organizational factors. The results revealed that organizational factors and attachment styles are important predictive measures of career satisfaction. A unique finding was the positive relationship between dismissing attachment and career satisfaction, a result we interpret as an outcome related to economic insecurity and crisis. Both theoretical and applied implications of the results are discussed and suggestions for future directions are addressed. © 2022, Associação Brasileira de Psicologia.Öğe Catching up with wonderful women: The women-are-wonderful effect is smaller in more gender egalitarian societies(JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD, 2018-10) Işık, İdil; Wise, Ryan MaceyInequalities between men and women are common and well-documented. Objective indexes show that men are better positioned than women in societal hierarchiesthere is no single country in the world without a gender gap. In contrast, researchers have found that the women-are-wonderful effectthat women are evaluated more positively than men overallis also common. Cross-cultural studies on gender equality reveal that the more gender egalitarian the society is, the less prevalent explicit gender stereotypes are. Yet, because self-reported gender stereotypes may differ from implicit attitudes towards each gender, we reanalysed data collected across 44 cultures, and (a) confirmed that societal gender egalitarianism reduces the women-are-wonderful effect when it is measured more implicitly (i.e. rating the personality of men and women presented in images) and (b) documented that the social perception of men benefits more from gender egalitarianism than that of women.Öğe INSTAGRAM SELFIE BEHAVIOR AS A FUNCTION OF PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS: A STUDY OF TURKISH EMERGING ADULTS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC(Tuncay AYDEMİR, 2021) Wise, Ryan Macey; Kalkan, AylinThe purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between personality characteristics and selfie behavior on Instagram among a sample of emerging adults in Turkey during the Covid-19 pandemic. Research has been mixed on how personality influences selfie taking and posting and demonstrates limited consideration of cultural variables, two problems we attempt to partly remedy in this study. Personality was measured using the Turkish version of the Big Five Inventory (B5KT-50-TR) and a series of questions was asked concerning frequency of selfie taking and sharing, the use of filtering and photo editing software, and the attention participants gave to monitoring followers’ ‘likes’ of their selfies. Results indicated that extraversion and openness to experience predicted the frequency of selfie sharing and monitoring of likes, while neuroticism predicted the use of filtering software. Results are contextualized within Turkish culture and related to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and its effects for young adults, including increased levels of loneliness.Öğe Intergenerational contact, aging anxiety and behavioral intentions toward older adults(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2021) Wise, Ryan Macey; Uzel, AsliCultural and societal (economic) variables are important considerations when considering intergenerational dynamics, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. With widespread multi-generational family living arrangements, a high cultural value placed on older adults, and a rapidly aging population, Turkey suggests the possibility of studying aging from a unique perspective. This study investigated the relationship between intergenerational contact, aging anxiety and endorsement of various behavioral intentions toward older adults in Turkey. A nonrandom convenience sampling technique generated a sample of 215 participants with a mean age of 20.84 (SD = 1.43). All measures were translated to Turkish and demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability. Participants reported having frequent and quality interactions with older adults and had positive aging attitudes. At the same time, personal aging anxiety was high and was not related with either the contact variables or attitudes. Behavioral intention items were factor analyzed (PCA; Varimax rotation), loading on two factors, termed direct and indirect intentions. Multiple regression analyses indicated that the combination of predictor variables (contact variables, attitudes, anxiety, and background characteristics) explained variability in behavior intentions, with aging attitudes the most robust predictor. This study replicated findings showing a positive contribution of intergenerational contact to aging attitudes and prosocial intentions toward older adults. A unique finding was that aging attitudes were not related to self-reported aging anxiety. We interpret this finding as reflecting growing economic problems for younger adults and present a novel interpretation of this relationship.Öğe Kamera Arkası: Türkiye’deki Set İşçileri Arasında Tükenmişlik ve Yardım Aramanın İncelenmesi(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2021-04-10) Akten, Ece; Wise, Ryan MaceyÖz- Arkaplan: Set işçileri, televizyon, film ve reklam prodüksiyon setlerinde istihdam edilmektedir. Uzun saatler çalışmak, finansal gü-vence eksikliği ve organizasyonel yapı eksikliği de dahil olmak üzere, çalışanların karşılaştığı büyük iş talepleri nedeniyle Türkiye’de set işçiligi ‘tehlikeli işler’ sınıfına dahil edilmiştir (Bekçi, 2015). Amaç: Bu çalışma, yardım aramanın iş taleplerinden korunmadaki potansiyel rolünü yorumlamak için Lazarus ve Folkman’ın (1984) problem odaklı başa çıkma kavramına atıfta bulunarak tükenmiş-liğin yordayıcılarını incelemektedir. Yöntem: Rastgele olmayan kolayda örnekleme tekniği ile çeşitli iş deneyimlerini temsil eden 432 katılımcıdan oluşan bir örneklem grubu elde edilmiştir. Bulgular: Mevcut çalışmanın üç ana bulgusu vardır. 1. Büyük iş talepleri (örneğin, çalısma saatleri, günler, gelir) tükenmişliği yordamaktadır. 2. Katılımcı özellikleri (örn. cinsiyet, aile durumu, çocuklar), en büyük etkiyi gösteren cinsiyetle birlikte, tükenmişliği kısmen yordamaktadır. 3. Yardım arama, tükenmişlik ile minimal düzeyde iliş-kilidir. Sonuç: Bulguları, çalışan refahını ve tükenmişlik deneyimlerini en aza indirebilecek veya şiddetlendirebilecek Türkiye kültürel ve sosyal dinamikleri bağlamında yorumluyoruz.Öğe PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AMONG FEMALE EMERGING ADULTS AS A FUNCTION OF PARENTAL AUTONOMY SUPPORT(Tuncay AYDEMİR, 2023) Wise, Ryan Macey; Erbahar, Aylin; Akınkoç, IlaydaThe current study examined female emerging adult well-being as a function of parental autonomy support in Turkey. The conceptualization of well-being included measures of vitality, stress, depression, and anxiety, while autonomy support was measured for both mothers and fathers. A nonrandom convenience sampling method was used and generated a sample of 140 participants. Analyses included multiple regression and t-tests. Significance was set at p = .05, and corresponding effect sizes were reported. Results of quantitative analyses indicated that parental autonomy support predicted well-being across all components. Father autonomy support exhibited a negative relationship with outcome measures, with mother autonomy support relating positively. The findings of the current study are contextualized within Turkish family culture, and suggestions for future research are discussed.Öğe SELF-HARM AMONG TURKISH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: THE ROLE OF MEANING IN LIFE(Tuncay AYDEMİR, 2022) Wise, Ryan MaceyBackground: Emerging adulthood is an important developmental period of young adult identity development (Arnett, 1998). During this period the search for mean-ing in life takes greater salience and has been found to relate with many develop-mental outcomes (Krok, 2018). Objective: This study examined the role of emerg-ing adult meaning in life as a predictor of psychological well-being and self-harm behaviors in a sample of female emerging adults in Turkey. Methods: Non-random convenience sampling generated a sample of 275 participants Each participant re-ported on adulthood status, self-harm behaviors, autonomy, psychological well-being (stress, depression, anxiety) and meaning in life. Results: There were three main findings. 1. Self-defined adulthood status was not predictive of well-being or meaning in life but was associated with autonomy. 2. Meaning in life exhibited a positive relationship with self-injury, and a negative relationship with autonomy and well-being. Conclusions: Meaning in life is interpreted within the Turkish cultural context and it is suggested that the search for meaning may lead to distress and low-er-levels of well-being among emerging adults, whereas the fulfillment of meaning has the opposite effect (Frankl, 1955).Öğe TATTOOS, RISK-TAKING BEHAVIORS, AND RELIGIOSITY AMONG YOUNG ADULTS IN TURKEY(Editura Univ Oradea, 2022) Wise, Ryan Macey; Akinkoc, IlaydaTattooing is a common and popular practice in many countries. Estimates suggest that upwards of 25% of people living in the United States, Europe, and Australia have at least one tattoo (Kertzman, Kagan, Hegedish, Lapidus, & Weizman, 2019; Kluger, 2015). Multiple studies from different cultures suggest links between tattooing, religiosity, and risk-taking behaviors (Carroll et al., 2002; Stirn, Hinz, & Brahler, 2006). While limited research has explored tattoo stigma and its relationship with these variables, studies indicate that stigma is an important consideration when examining tattoos and tattoo experiences (Broussard & Harton, 2018). The current study first presents a Turkish translation and adaptation of the Martin Stigma against Tattoos Scale (MSATS; Martin & Dula, 2010), the first adaptation in Turkish. Secondly, we examine the inter-relationships between tattoos and tattoo stigma, religiosity, and risk-taking in a sample of young adults living in Istanbul, Turkey. A non-random convenience sampling technique generated a sample of 432 participants between the ages of 18 and 25. Participants completed an online survey assessing their tattoo-related attitudes and characteristics, religiosity, and engagement in a diverse set of risk-taking behaviors. The Turkish adaptation of the MSATS demonstrated validity and high reliability. Further, the main findings from our study demonstrated greater risk-taking behaviors among those with tattoos; that religiosity exhibited a negative relationship with both tattoos and risk-taking; and that stigma was predicted by tattoo status and age. There was no significant difference in grade point average between participants with and without tattoos. We interpret the findings in the context of Turkish cultural and social dynamics and link our findings to previous studies.Öğe THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERCEIVED PARENTING PRACTICES AND WELL-BEING AMONG YOUNG ADULT FEMALES IN TURKEY(Editura Univ Oradea, 2021) Wise, Ryan Macey; Erbahar, AylinThe family in modern Turkey faces a challenge in balancing the traditional collective value system that emphasizes the group over the individual, while also integrating a greater push toward self-expression and autonomy among young adults. Providing autonomy support within the relational bonds of the family represents a challenge for the collectivistic oriented family in Turkey. The focus of this study was to examine this problem through an analysis of parenting practices and their influence on emerging adult well-being in the context of cultural change. A non-random convenience sample of 238 female emerging adults living in Istanbul, Turkey, reported on their mothers' and fathers' parenting practices and their own psychological well-being. A series of multiple regression analyses explored the predictive strength of parenting practices. For mothers, the most consistent predictor of participant well-being was autonomy support, while for fathers it was emotional warmth. Participants indicated mothers were more involved and provided more autonomy support than did fathers. Parental involvement was not significantly related to any well-being measure. Significantly higher optimism and life satisfaction was found for participants identifying as an adult. The results are suggestive of the emergence of a new fathering role in urban middle-SES families. Mother and father warmth scores were not perceived to be different, but father warmth was predictive of well-being, indicating both a transition away from traditional authoritarianism and toward a greater emotionally-present democratic parenting style. These novel findings are interpreted as a reflection of a change in fathering related to mothering.
